What are deepfakes? An overview.
According to Norbert Tulak, a "Deepfake is an image or voice processing technique used to generate false
images and videos, made possible by advances in artificial intelligence and
machine learning technology." (Tulak 201).

In this website, we argue that deepfakes are becoming increasingly more advanced, thus making it harder to distinguish the 'real' from the 'fake'.

We propose that there should be increased regulations placed on deepfakes to reduce the possibility of risks, but also that there should be increased transparency within Artificial Intelligence as a whole.
Real or Fake?
via BBC
To provide an introduction to what deepfake content can look like, here are 4 images. Can you determine whether these images are real or deepfakes?
Answer
DEEPFAKE!!
All of these images of former U.S. President Donald Trump were produced through artificial intelligence in 2023.

At first, it seems as though some of these images are real—however, upon taking a closer look, one can note that some details (i.e. fingers, facial expressions, etc.) seem off.

Current deepfakes still seem to have a tinge of error, but the margins of error are rapidly decreasing.
